Assumptions

  • The estimate adds only the selected course price, state fee, and any selected processing fee.
  • The estimate excludes unpriced background checks, fingerprints, examinations, insurance, bonds, ID cards, taxes, late fees, and employer costs.
  • The state, timing, role, and fee choices must describe the same route. The calculator cannot establish course approval or personal eligibility.
  • Texas first-time totals are not calculated because current posted DPS rule figures and its older public fee schedule differ.

In brief

Private-investigator training cost is not one price. Texas DPS and Minnesota DPS figures accessed in 2026 range from $33 for Texas registration plus subscription to $1,000 for a new Minnesota individual licence, before other charges that may apply. Use the calculator for listed costs, then check the verdict before treating a course as qualifying.

Worked example at the defaults

With state at 0, application timing at 0, role or route at 0, selected course price at $130, official state fee at $70, added processing fee at $0:

Listed course and state cost
$200
Selected government fee
$70

Formula: selected course price + matching official state fee + selected processing fee. The formula does not make a licensing decision, so use the verdict band as a prompt to check the state route and course approval.

Two Vermont cost routesA decision diagram comparing a $200 Vermont registered-employee route with a $325 licensed-private-investigator route and their extra eligibility gates.

For the clean Vermont examples, the listed totals are $200 for a new unarmed registered investigative employee and $325 for a new unarmed licensed PI. The licensed-PI route has additional non-price gates, so neither figure represents a guaranteed licence outcome.

Frequently asked

A state can charge different fees and set different training rules for an employee, an independent licensee, an armed applicant, or a company. For example, Vermont publishes separate application fees for unarmed registered investigative employees and unarmed licensed private investigators.

No. A listed course price only measures that course plus the state fee you select. Licensing can also require an approved delivery format, experience, an examination, references, background checks, employer sponsorship, or other documents that are outside the displayed total.

Georgia requires at least 70 hours of classroom instruction for private-detective licensees and registered private-detective employees. A course should be treated as qualifying only after its current delivery format and state approval are confirmed for the applicant's exact route.

Texas private investigators with fewer than 15 years of licensure need 18 continuing-education hours every two years. Those with more than 15 years need 12 hours every two years, and the credits must come from a department-approved continuing-education school.

Minnesota's private-detective renewal fee depends on the number of employees. The published fee is $540 for one employee and increases through $1,220 for 51 or more employees, while training requirements also follow the licence year and the worker's role.
