70 Hour Private Investigator Course Georgia: What to Verify

TL;DR

Choose a Georgia 70-hour private investigator course only after matching it to your role, checking the Board-approved instructor, reviewing the required curriculum and final exam, seeing the certificate fields, and planning the separate licensing application. A completion certificate documents training. It does not by itself authorize private-investigator work.

Choose a Georgia 70-hour private-investigator course only after it passes seven checks: role, instructor, syllabus, exam, certificate, schedule, and licensing route. Georgia requires at least 70 hours of classroom instruction for private-detective licensees and registered private-detective employees.

The course is initial training. The Board still decides whether to issue your employee registration or licence after it receives the required application materials, fees, and background results.

Use This Georgia 70-Hour Course Checklist

Complete these seven checks before you choose a course or pay tuition.

  1. Name the role you want after training.
Decide whether you will work as a private-detective employee for a licensed company, work in-house, or seek to operate a private-detective company. A company-owner route has separate experience or degree requirements and a Board examination. Georgia’s licensing rule sets those requirements.

  2. Get the instructor’s full name and Georgia licence number.
Georgia requires basic-training instructors to be Board-approved. Use the Board’s license-search service to check the named instructor.

  3. Ask for a timed syllabus.
The syllabus must show 70 actual hours and map the course to Rule 509-3-.06. A course title or a “70 credit hours” label does not show how the hours are allocated.

  4. Ask how the final examination works.
Georgia’s required curriculum calls for a two-hour final examination covering all subjects. The rule identifies a 75% minimum passing score as a qualification condition. Read the examination rule.

  5. See a sample certificate before enrolling.
Georgia requires the certificate to show your name, the training entity, training dates, topics, actual hours, the instructor or facilitator’s name and signature, and that person’s full Board licence number. Read the certificate fields.

  6. Match the delivery format to your actual calendar.
Ask how the provider records attendance or course time, when access ends, how instructor help works, and whether the current delivery method supports your exact Georgia role.

  7. Plan the state application that follows.
Employee applicants need more than proof of training. The Board’s checklist includes an application, fee, proof of training, affidavit of employment, background check, and other applicable documents. See the employee checklist.

Your decision rule: choose the course when you can match all seven answers to your intended role. If the instructor, certificate, or hours cannot be identified, choose a different course or ask the Georgia Board before purchasing.

Do I Need a 70-Hour PI Course in Georgia?

You need the 70-hour basic-training course when you are pursuing the Georgia private-detective employee or licence route covered by the Board’s training rule. The Board’s FAQ says private-detective applicants must complete at least 70 classroom hours in a basic training program. Georgia’s FAQ

The course is different from renewal continuing education. If you already hold a Georgia private-detective credential and need renewal hours, start with Georgia PI renewal course options instead of buying initial training.

A company-owner route is also different. Georgia requires a private-detective company applicant to have two years of qualifying detective or law-enforcement experience, or a four-year criminal-justice or related degree. The Board also sets a company-licence examination. Company qualifications

What Must a Georgia 70-Hour Course Include?

Georgia’s course rule is a purchasing checklist. Ask the provider to show where each required topic appears in its timed syllabus.

The course must address the detective profession, Georgia’s licensing law and Board rules, criminal procedure, criminal law, rules of evidence, interviewing, report writing, the U.S. legal system, and courtroom testimony. It must also cover research sources, database and open-source research, court-record research, privacy concerns, surveillance, undercover work, crime-scene analysis, case management, business practices, and ethics. Georgia’s full curriculum lists the required subject blocks.

Surveillance deserves a separate check. The rule requires at least four hours on covert-surveillance methodology, including preparation, privacy, trespass and stalking limits, mobile and stationary methods, documentation, and counter-surveillance.

A final course exam belongs in the plan, too. Schedule time for the two-hour examination rather than treating all 70 hours as lesson time.

Online, Live, or Hybrid: Which Format Fits My Schedule?

Start with the number of hours you can protect each week. At 10 hours a week, 70 hours takes seven weeks. At 14 hours a week, 70 hours takes five weeks, before allowing time for the final examination.

Self-Paced Online Study

Self-paced study fits an irregular work calendar when you can reserve recurring blocks for lessons and assessments. It is a poor fit when you need a fixed deadline but cannot commit protected study time.

Ask how the provider records the required course time, how quickly an instructor responds, and when course access expires. Georgia’s rule uses the term “classroom instruction,” so your course record and instructor details matter more than an “online” label.

Scheduled Virtual Instruction

Scheduled virtual instruction fits learners who finish work better with fixed meeting times. Put every session, missed-class rule, and examination date on your calendar before enrolling.

A live schedule can make 70 hours easier to pace. It can also create problems if surveillance work, travel, or shift changes make attendance unpredictable.

Classroom or Hybrid Training

Classroom or hybrid training fits learners who want set sessions and face-to-face instruction. Add travel time, parking, and any required in-person examination time to your 70-hour plan.

Choose the format that you can complete with documented participation. The course must still cover the state curriculum and provide the required completion record.

What a Completion Certificate Does and Does Not Do

A completion certificate proves that you completed the documented training. It does not make you an active Georgia private detective.

For a private-detective employee route, the Board requires an application process and supporting documents. The employee checklist includes proof of training, an affidavit of employment, a background check, and a signed, notarized application with the required fee. Employee application requirements

You may not legally perform private-detective services while your application is pending. Georgia’s Board says unlicensed practice can lead to criminal consequences and can affect an application. Board guidance on pending applications

Carrying a handgun is another separate decision. Private detectives and registered employees authorized to carry a handgun need the applicable firearms training in addition to the 70-hour curriculum. Additional firearms requirement
