Texas PI CE Course Planner

A full-time schedule can make renewal feel harder than it is. Texas DPS sets a two-year CE cycle and separates the 18-hour path from the 12-hour path based on continued registration history.

Texas private investigators can complete renewal CE online through a Texas DPS-approved continuing-education school. Your plan must match continuous registration history: less than 15 years requires 18 hours, while more than 15 years requires 12. Both totals include ethics and Chapter 1702 plus Chapter 35 review. Initial licensing follows separate requirements.

We built this guide to help you choose the right track, verify a course before paying, protect your weekend or weeknight study time, and keep a clean renewal file.

Is This Initial Training or Renewal CE?

This Texas PI CE course planner is for an existing individual PI licensee, or a qualifying manager, who needs renewal education. It is not a shortcut to obtaining a first PI license or operating an investigations company.

DPS says private investigator applicants do not submit a training certificate as a prerequisite in the same way certain security and personal-protection applicants do. Original licensure still involves its own TOPS application, eligibility, fingerprinting, and affiliation requirements. A company representative may also face separate experience or education routes, including a specialized 200-hour course of study in certain circumstances. Review the DPS licensing FAQ before treating renewal CE as initial qualification.

Class A and Class C describe company-license classifications, with Class C covering both investigations and security-contractor operations. Keep the company path separate from your individual renewal calculation. If you are researching career preparation rather than renewal, our professional investigator course is the better starting point.

Which CE Track Applies to You?

Your continued Texas registration history determines the track, not the shortest package available. The rule uses “less than” and “more than” 15 years, so an exactly 15-year record or a registration gap deserves a DPS confirmation before enrollment.

The required law-and-rules review is part of the total, not an extra two hours after you finish the investigation content. The controlling DPS CE chart also says these PI requirements recur every two years.

Noncommissioned security officers are exempt from this PI CE requirement, while commissioned security officers and personal-protection officers have separate renewal obligations. For the PI calculation alone, use our 12 or 18 CE hours guide before choosing a course length.

How Does Your Texas PI CE Course Planner Build a Compliant Mix?

Treat each course as a category decision, not just a total-hour purchase. An 18-hour investigation-only package does not cure a missing ethics or law-and-rules requirement, even if the total looks right.

Map Every Hour Before Checkout

Start with your track, subtract completed credits inside the current renewal period, then assign each new course to one category. A course should state both its total credit and its subject allocation clearly enough to support the certificate.

Confirm the School and Course

Use the public TOPS training search, choose “Training,” then filter for “Private Investigation Continuing Education.” Confirm the school’s current status and identifier, save the search date, and compare the course description with the categories you still need.

Avoid Three Common Planning Errors

  • Duplicate hours: Do not assign one block of instruction to two required categories unless the course documentation expressly supports that allocation.
  • Wrong credential: Do not assume security, firearms, generic investigation, or company-qualification training automatically counts as PI renewal CE.
  • Late credits: Do not rely on old surplus hours. DPS says credits must fall within the two-year period preceding the current expiration date.

Our Chapter 1702 guide explains why the two law-and-rules hours belong inside your 12- or 18-hour total.

Can You Finish Around a Full-Time Job?

Yes, an online course can fit nights and weekends when the school is approved and the course covers your required categories. Convenience does not remove the actual instruction, assessment, certificate, or renewal deadline requirements, so schedule the full course workload rather than just the video time.

Use Three Realistic Study Schedules

  • One Weekend: Reserve two full study days, plus a final assessment and certificate buffer. Enter the course-published runtime before deciding this option is realistic.
  • Two Weekends: Divide study into six blocks across two weekends, leaving the final block for assessments, certificate review, and filing.
  • Weeknights: Use four 90-minute sessions and two longer weekend blocks, then complete the course at least a week before renewal.

Use our online course selection resource to compare course fit with your available study blocks and renewal deadline.

Test Mobile Fit Before You Depend on It

Before purchase, test whether your intended phone or tablet saves progress after sign-out, resumes in the same lesson, supports assessments, displays captions, and downloads the certificate. Also ask whether access expires, whether identity checks apply, and whether support is available during your intended study window.

What Records Should You Keep?

A renewal file is easiest to build as you go. DPS requires proof of CE to be maintained by the employer in the employee personnel file, while attendees must retain completion certificates for two years.

Your certificate should show your name and license number, attendance date, hours, course title, and the school director’s signature and date. Save the TOPS search result, course description, receipt, certificate, and your renewal-date calculation together. The DPS records rule also requires schools to keep CE records for two years and provide them to DPS when requested.

Give your employer a copy promptly, keep your own digital copy, and check the certificate before filing your renewal. Our Texas PI requirements page can help you make one final category check.

Plan Your Renewal with Learningshopusa

At Learningshopusa, we built our Texas PI course for investigators who need a clear online route through the less-than-15-year renewal track. Our published course combines 18 hours: 14 investigation-related hours, two ethics hours, and two hours reviewing Chapter 1702 and the administrative rules. We list the course at $175, track progress online, and issue a completion certificate after the required assessments. Before you enroll, compare that course structure with your own registration history, current expiration date, device, and employer filing process. We encourage every learner to confirm our active school status in TOPS on the day of enrollment, then keep the course description, receipt, and certificate together. If your record is exactly at 15 years, has a registration gap, or includes another credential, ask DPS which requirement governs your renewal. Build that file before renewal day and start your planning with Learning Shop USA.

FAQs on Texas PI CE Course Planner

Can Texas PI Renewal CE Be Completed Online?

Yes. Online renewal CE can qualify when a department-approved school provides needed categories and hours. Confirm the live school record, course details, assessments, and certificate process before enrolling.

Do I Need 12 or 18 Texas PI CE Hours?

Investigators with less than 15 years of continued registration generally need 18 hours. Those with more than 15 years generally need 12 hours, including ethics and law-and-rules review.

Does Chapter 1702 Add Two More CE Hours?

No. The required two hours reviewing Chapter 1702 and Chapter 35 are included within the 12- or 18-hour total, alongside investigation-related instruction and ethics.

Do Texas PI CE Courses Require Proctoring?

Proctoring and identity-check procedures vary by course. Ask the school about assessment rules, identity verification, retakes, and device requirements before relying on an unproctored weekend completion plan.

What Records Should I Keep After Completing CE?

Keep your certificate for two years, provide required proof to your employer, and save your receipt, course description, category plan, and TOPS school-verification record for audit readiness.
